The next Data Science seminar will take place on Wednesday 11th September, at 4:00pm in Room 038 building FSΤ01 (ΘΕΕ 01). The speaker will be Prof. Christophe Ley (Department of Mathematics, University of Luxembourg) and the title of his talk will be “Sports analytics: when figures are more than numbers”.
Abstract:
This talk will provide a gentle introduction to the growing world of sport analytics. After talking about its genesis and giving some striking examples from professional sports, I will delve into the application of statistics and machine learning techniques. I will explain how these methodologies enable the prediction of sporting event outcomes and provide coaches with invaluable insights into the key factors influencing these predictions, thereby optimizing tactical strategies. Additionally, I will offer insights into the potential translation of these findings into the realm of sports medicine, particularly in terms of estimating injury risks.
